24/7 Frequently Asked Questions

Sexual Assault Response Program — Forensic Evidence Collection

What is a forensic evidence collection kit?

A forensic evidence collection kit is a medical exam that collects potential evidence after a sexual assault. It may include collecting DNA, documenting injuries, and other procedures. The exam is completely optional, and you are in control at all times—you can stop or skip any part of it.

Who is this service for?

We provide forensic evidence collection services for adolescents and adults who have experienced a sexual assault.

How soon after an assault should I come in?

If the assault happened within the past 5 days (120 hours), we recommend seeking care as soon as you feel ready to help preserve any time-sensitive evidence. If it’s been longer than 5 days, you can still receive medical care and access support services during regular business hours, every day 8:00am-6:00pm.

Is this service available 24/7?

Yes — our team is available 24/7 for assaults that have occurred within the last 5 days (120 hours).

For assaults that occurred more than 5 days ago, we’re available to support you during regular business hours, every day 8:00am – 6:00pm.

Do I have to report to the police to get an exam?

No. You are not required to report to law enforcement to receive an exam. You have the right to a medical forensic exam without making a report. Your kit can be stored securely while you take time to decide what’s right for you.

How do I access care after hours?

If you need services outside of regular business hours, call (906) 226-6611. An on-call advocate and nurse will be contacted and meet for the exam at Marquette Medical.

Will someone be there to support me?

Yes. We work in partnership with the Women’s Center of Marquette, whose trained advocates are available to provide emotional support, answer questions, and help with safety planning and follow-up care.

What should I do before coming in for an exam?

If you are able to, try not to:

  • Bathe or shower
  • Change clothes
  • Use the restroom
  • Brush your teeth

However, you can still receive an exam even if you’ve already done these things. Your health and well-being come first—please don’t let this stop you from seeking care.

Can I bring someone with me?

Yes. You are welcome to bring a trusted friend, family member, or support person. If you come alone, our team and advocates will be there to support you throughout the process.

What happens after the exam?

You’ll be offered medical care, medications to prevent STIs and pregnancy if needed, and referrals to ongoing resources. Advocates from the Women’s Center can help you connect to counseling, legal support, and any other services you may want. Please see their website for additional resources here.
